In the Dust drawings, artists’ identities are hidden under masks. Although these portraits are carefully rendered halves of different faces, they are joined at the covered nose creating another levels of non-recognition. Cropping emphasizes the mask’s unintended function as a muzzle in muffling verbal communication. The original photographs were taken in 1995 and the drawings were made a few years later.
